It is with great sadness that we share the news that one of the true greats from Barkers, Bob Roberts, passed away peacefully earlier this week. 💙💛
Bob was well known and well respected by everyone at the Club. He wasn’t a Barkers’ player or a coach but the work he did behind the scenes for many decades has made the club the success it is today.
Keith Groom, who worked closely with Bob on the Main Committee, recalls “Bob served on the Club committee for well over 30 years, first as Honorary Secretary, then as Treasurer steering the Club to financial profitability. Bob had played rugby for Keresley and joined Barkers’ when his son Daniel joined the M&J, Daniel going on to play for the Men’s 1st XV team.
Bob was a staunch supporter and administrator of Rugby in general, serving on several WRFU committees. It was Bob who convinced me to join the Club committee some 23 years ago. Throughout my time as President, then Honorary Secretary, I found him to be a trustworthy colleague and a great friend and confidant, who would give you an honest opinion whether he agreed with you or not.
Bob was Barkers through and through working tirelessly through the difficult times helping lay the foundations for the future and will be sadly missed."
Bob will be missed so much by his wife Barbara, his children, and grandchildren and all his friends at the Club. Rest easy Bob x
