The U16’s found themselves with a double header this weekend
Both away to fierce rivals OC’s and Earlsdon
Friday away at OC’s
A bright start with both teams pushing for the first score, lots of attacking and excellent defence but OC’s with they’re more aggressive game got the first score and that set the pattern for the rest of the half with the HT score being 33-0
Barkers started brightly in the second half and pushed for that opening score but it just wasn’t to be
OC’s again opened the scoring after a period of Butts pressure before getting a second in the half
Not giving in Barkers kept on pushing and virtually on the whistle from a line out drive Rory Gallagher got himself over the line
FT 45-5
A tough night where opportunities were few and those that were in offer not taken.
OC’s played a tight aggressive game and Barkers found it hard to match in the first half
Not getting any go forward ball to feed the back line it was a half of constant tackling and frustration for all involved
The second half was an improvement, a lot tighter but the game was already lost and pride came into play . The disappointment could be seen and felt and hopefully a few lessons learnt .
Then came Sunday Earlsdon away
A hang over from Friday perhaps but the game began badly with a failed kick off receive compounded with a turned over ball not long afterwards leading to Earlsdon taking the lead 7-0 followed by a taken penalty kick and a lead of 10-0 in the first quarter of the half . But back came Barkers led by an aggressive defensive effort from notable Ollie Hurst whose tackle count in the first 15 minutes was into double figures and the back row leading the example for the forwards
Then came the fight back a Byron Brown score followed by a captains double for Ethan Spandley to give Barkers a 15-10 lead at HT
As tough as the first half began the second was as dominant as a performance could be
From a line out the ball moved along the back line and into Sam Mikhael’s hands who chinked and powered his way to the line for Freddie to convert
10-22
Then came a Luke Linton try , a short pass to Luke and he powered thru the defensive line to go from just inside the 10m line to go the distance to score , Freddie adding the extras
10-29
This was followed after good pressure on the line by Rory Gallagher close range effort again Freddie doing the business before Charlie Gaut got in on the act from beyond the 22m line to expose a tiring Earlsdon defence bursting thru the tackles , Freddie again slotting the conversion
10-43
Then came the final try of the game and it belonged to live wire jack in the box Freddie Painter ghosting thru the Earlsdon defences and duly converting his own score
FT 10-50
It looks a comfortable win but the score line doesn’t reflect the effort Earlsdon put in
A second half performance from Barkers which showed all what is good about our game
Built on a massive defensive effort in the first half and then a tiring Earlsdon team put to the sword by a stung Barkers team
Congratulations to debutants Lewis and Max
A speedy recovery to Sam Mikhael
And thanks for all the support over both games
